TASK Engineering recently participated in the member gathering of the Bundesverband Windenergie Offshore (BWO) in Berlin.

The discussions highlighted a topic that is becoming increasingly important across the offshore wind industry: the transition from installation and operation towards decommissioning, repowering, and circular value creation.
As offshore wind farms in the North Sea and Baltic Sea gradually approach the end of their operational lifetime, the industry is entering a new phase—one that requires more than technical solutions alone. Long-term planning certainty, suitable infrastructure, and coordinated regulatory frameworks will be essential to manage this transition efficiently.
The focus is no longer solely on expanding offshore capacity.
Increasingly, attention is shifting towards how existing assets, infrastructure, and materials can be responsibly repowered, dismantled, recycled, and integrated into the next generation of offshore projects.

From our perspective, successful decommissioning and repowering strategies require an integrated view of offshore assets, ports, logistics, recycling capacities, and future project development. As offshore wind enters its next lifecycle phase, practical project experience and strategic planning will need to work increasingly hand in hand.
The discussions also underlined the important role of industry associations such as BWO in bringing together operators, policymakers, infrastructure providers, and the wider supply chain to develop practical solutions for the next lifecycle phase of offshore wind.
At TASK Engineering, these developments are already part of our daily work. Through projects such as the decommissioning of the Arkona Met Mast Foundation, we are gaining practical experience in the planning, logistics, and operational challenges associated with offshore decommissioning.
As the offshore wind sector matures, installation, operation, decommissioning, repowering, and recycling will increasingly take place in parallel rather than in sequence. Preparing the necessary infrastructure, competencies, and industrial capacities today will be a key factor in successfully managing the coming decades of offshore development.
The discussions in Berlin reinforced the importance of developing not only technical solutions, but also the port infrastructure, logistics concepts, and industrial capabilities required to support the full lifecycle of offshore wind assets.
